This adaptive reuse project offers a critical evaluation of contemporary museum programming and a proposal for new ways to engage the public with Art institutions.
Positioned as an extension to Thomas Phifer’s Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and located in an iconic East Wall shopping mall across the street, Open Wall Open Call offers archival space for the public’s private collections, performance spaces, and workshops.
The driving force of the project is not to shy away from strange adjacencies between retail and art. We consume objects; we view art. We want new trainers. Art Excites us. We want a new bag. Art challenges us. We want a car. Art disturbs us. We want a new phone. Art confounds us. In our techno dominant world, we are forced to experience these often-conflicting desires in immediate succession. Instagram, Twitter and the likes force us to learn how to absorb information or engage with ideas at odds with one another. Our architectures are yet to reflect this reality. Instead, they attempt to define isolated spatial experiences.
What version or ourselves do we inhabit when we enter a museum?
Who are we when we shop?
