Kit House II

Critic: George Legrende

This proposal  reconsiders the Kit Home, a home type typical of post-war American optimism that failed  to deliver the dreams it promised.

Making the most of the OSM efficiencies and learning from the typical office floor plan, “Make-A-House (Not just a Home)” splits the manufacturing and construction of the house so that plumbed/electrical components are manufactured off site and delivered as “core” elements to be built upon on site. The scheme takes a parametric look at achieving the heterogeneity necessary given the different lifestyles of people today. A brochure offers potential clients the chance to start their house design by selecting the appliances they need and design a core layout.

Whilst the core is fixed off site, the second skin, consisting of removable panels with varying opacity, are chosen on a case-by-case basis in accordance with the sun exposure/orientation of each specific site condition. As such, the generic character of mass production is overcome, providing a range of possibilities from one construction method and material pallet.
